According to common sense, low-priced used cars aren’t always the best things to buy when you’re shopping for a new car, as the cost of ownership once you actually buy it could skyrocket based on a number of factors. Don’t forget, vehicles need regular maintenance, and cheap used cars probably are cheap for a reason. Auto shippers tend to ship newer cars, but there are plenty of used cars that are shipped, and they can tell you from just looking at the car that some of them have real problems. Sometimes going with a cheap new car and setting up a financing plan is a good idea, as it can help your credit as well, though it depends on your financial situation. Pickups Not Just For Work

Ford, GMC and Dodge have made waves with their newly-introduced “luxury pickup trucks,” which are having a huge effect on consumers who are only wanting more. The idea is that by putting things such as leather seats, a ton of chrome and making the pickup more of a daily driver and status symbol than a workhorse is appealing to a lot of so-called guys. Despite the price, which can be anywhere from $45,000 and up, rich guys think they’re awesome, and it shows: auto shipping companies have noticed a huge influx in the number of luxury pickup trucks moving, shiny things that don’t ever see dirt. It’s a shame, really…when I grew up, a truck was something you learned to drive at 14 years old to haul all the yard debris around. I learned to drive on a 1985 Chevy Silverado with a 10-ft bed. I think the guys who buy these types of trucks need a man card revoked.

Electric Expressway To Be Built in Cali

California governor Edmund Brown has issued an executive order that will set aside $120 million for infrastructure and support costs for a brand new “electric expressway” that will cross the state. It will be a highway designed for electric vehicles, with over 200 public fast-charging stations and another 10,000 plug-in units at 1,000 different locations along the road. The best news for auto shippers (and their customers) is that this will hopefully clear up traffic problems slightly, allowing people another way to move around California. Regardless, the plan is part of the overall goal that the state has of reaching 1.5 million zero-emission vehicles on the roads of California by 2025.

Acura Hopes For Better 2012

Acura, the company who was hit hard by the natural disasters in the Pacific last year, saw 2011 sales number tank; they’re hoping, now that things have calmed down where their manufacturers are, that 2012 will be much better. Leading the way is the brand new ILX model as well as the revamped RDX crossover SUV, and while auto shippers have yet to see either of these cars, it’s only a matter of time before they’re on the sales floor and ready for buying. But the industry did notice a sharp decrease in the number of new Acura vehicles shipped, so let’s hope 2012 brings better days for the company.

The Crown Victoria is synonymous with the term “police car,” but with the retirement of it at the end of last year police departments across the country have been wondering what they’ll be driving next. Ford Motor Company has stepped up, offering both the new Taurus and the new Explorer to police departments which features a 32% better fuel economy than the Crown Victoria, which can save police departments $153,000 per year in fuel costs. While auto transporters don’t often ship police cars, it’s good to know that our law enforcement agencies are saving money at the pump to better pay for things that can actually protect the people.

Toyota and Lexus are releasing a new lease plan for customers called the Excessive Wear and Use Protection Plan (EWU). This will help customers avoid unexpected charges when returning their leased vehicle thanks to random dings, dents and scratches, as well as make the return process easier by eliminating claim forms and ultimately keeping customers happy. Auto transport companies don’t often ship leased vehicles, but many automobile dealerships are changing the way they lease vehicles, offering longer lease plans at lower monthly rates. This has led to a slight increase in the number of leased vehicles shipped, though it is still uncommon. Still, this is helpful for consumers as well, as they can avoid costly fees when returning a vehicle, which is always good news.

GM, Toyota Score Top in Fuel Efficiency

A website going by the name TotalCarScore.com has recently released their list of the top cars in terms of total fuel efficiency. And, wouldn’t you know it, the Toyota Prius came in first (no real surprises there). But the Prius comes in at 50 total mpg, high above the rest of the pack. But it didn’t just show which vehicles ranked at the top, but which companies had the most overall fuel efficiency across all their lines, and GM and Toyota were the top two. Auto transport companies are starting to see a shift in the number of hybrid vehicles and pure electrics that are being shipped, so even though it hasn’t exactly spread like wildfire, the eco-movement is making waves across the country, and auto transporters couldn’t be happier. More cars on their trucks means more money in their pocket, and they all have bills to pay.

Nissan Adds Leather To Leaf

The Nissan Leaf sold just under 10,000 units, and auto transport companies moved a lot of them. But one of the biggest complaints that people had about was – of all things – the lack of a leather interior, or at least the option for one. While this may not seem auto transport related, it would surprise you how much a person’s idea of luxury goes into deciding whether or not to ship their car. People tend to ship more expensive vehicles and drive less expensive ones – or at least ones they perceive as expensive. By adding a leather interior option to the Leaf, Nissan is hoping to expand on their sales numbers and double the ones from last year – which will help auto transporters, as a lot of people like to ship their Leafs because their local Nissan dealers are out of stock or sell them for more than they’d like to spend.

Fiat, the company that bought out the Chrysler Group a few years ago, is looking at exploiting their new acquisition by pushing several new models bearing the fiat name into the U.S. market, as well as ratcheting up their marketing campaign in the States. Known mostly in Europe, the Fiat acquisition of Chrysler went almost unnoticed by most people, though it has definitely paid off – in spades, no less. Chrysler has turned around, becoming a major automobile manufacturer again and cranking up sales numbers. Auto transporters have noticed an increase in Chrysler vehicles being shipped – will Fiat follow suit in the U.S.?

The new Toyota Prius c model is making waves since its introduction a few months ago, having sold over 1,000 units already – and more are continuing to roll off dealership floors. The new Prius c gets an estimated 53 miles per gallon city, a huge step up from all the rest of the cars that are on the road today. Auto transporters often see Prius models on the back of their rigs, but the new c is selling like hotcakes – and it’s still going strong. This could be the car that sets the new bar for all automakers in terms of mpg, which is only a good thing for consumers, especially when gas prices are skyrocketing like they have been.
